unorganized thoughts on “crediting” things online
note: i swear i will get better at ‘making a point’ one of these days…
1. if in your life, you do/plan to go after or complain about every single person who rips your work, you are not aiming very high. when you actually hit the mass-audience you so desperately dream about- you’ll have long stopped giving a shit about people “stealing” (read: posting) your work online without crediting you.
2. would you rather have 20 people post your work, properly cited- or have a hundred be able to see your image/media and say “oh wow! i’ve seen that!” or “i have that saved on my hard drive it’s so awesome!” or generally, be aware of the existence of your work. if you don’t pick the first option- what are you really after? fame? popularity?
2a. maybe some people are after that, but i’d assume if you’re making something and posting it online- your REAL goal is to let others experience what you make. just let it happen. give your ego a sedative and go make something newer and better.
3. it’s interesting how different media get different responses. artwork + photography + design people FLIP SHIT when they’re not credited. what about musicians? writers seem to be very vocal about it to. code? has anyone noticed any patterns here?
