excellent blog post. the only thing that i wanted to note is that for some trades, particularly mine, (web design) in-person meets are pretty much always better than phone meetings. i also think of packaging design, which often utilizes (3D) paper prototypes being problematic for this.
this is mostly due to the general ‘newness’ of the profession. usually clients don’t know what they want or need, or how the actual web design process works and that’s totally ok. most need to see things drawn out to get the whole “contraption” in their head. this is also totally ok- almost every client i’ve ever taken on has included an initial ‘tutoring’ session of different types of websites and how they work, sort of a Q&A session. most people have never heard of “buying web space” and don’t even really understand the idea. educating people at the beginning tends to make the whole project go smoother.
and sadly, no live-meeting-sketch software will ever replace the ease of shuffling around a few pages of mockups and drawing directly on them. (to me, at least)
i love the crap out of this quote though, and the ideas behind the post are well said.
