“And if women have it made, why would you be so ungrateful to point to something and call it sexism?”
Yet the more we talked to our friends and colleagues, the more we heard the same stories of disillusionment, regardless of profession.
quoted from an excellent newsweek article, found the link via equalitymyth.
women have it far better, but as the article mentioned, the victory may be premature. men still dominate photography, design, illustration, web, technology and all of the areas relevant in my life/career. (amongst others, but i don’t know enough about those areas to speak confidently)
and on a micro note, women still have to struggle in the workplace when they try to be as confident and aggressive as their male counterparts. if a man is aggressive, he is awesome. if a woman is aggressive or even blunt, she is probably PMSing. or she’s like, a total bitch. (this is applying to women not already in high positions)
and as always, there’s the ever-evolving sentiment of “but you’re a girl, life is totally easier for you”. as if men fucking bow at my feet or something when i walk by in my unflattering hoodie and jeans, give me free food and hire me for my awesomely (well-hidden) tits?
i admire newsweek for being truthful enough to admit this:
No one would dare say today that “women don’t write here,” as the NEWSWEEK women were told 40 years ago.
But men wrote all but six of NEWSWEEK’s 49 cover stories last year—and two of those used the headline “The Thinking Man.”
i think that last statement speaks more volumes than i could ever write.
