When did we become so afraid of maintaining, updating, and manipulating HTML? And when did the use of CSS become tied to the idea of never having to touch our markup? Fundamentally even those leading this movement towards having “sexy” stylesheets don’t always practice what they preach; most of the markup created by the ‘best of the best’ is a combination of presentational and structural.

from smart CSS ain’t always sexy CSS

very good read. for all the self-taughts out there, it’s a good reminder not to get too caught up in this CSS minimalism thang.

you can only achieve ‘simple’ if you can think through your markup, the project, the context and the future.

also, i’ve had a few students approach me in the last year or so and ask me how they can learn CSS or “how to make a website”. i don’t think i have any recent memory of being asked to learn HTML. one is nothing without the other.

instead of reading about whatever CSSframework is out or the new hot way to make rounded corners, try brushing up on your markup skillz.
