this is what happens when i learn new things, get excited, and need to share said excitement immediately. ben was the chosen one.
anyway, the thing i learned was that text-overflow exists and apparently IE has been supporting it forever! that means i can truncate [with ellipses] based on width and not character count! HOT. more learning can be done in this nettuts post about CSS3 properties.
update: still doing research to get a good sense of how stable this is, but it seems safari, chrome and IE support this. opera too, with o-text-overflow. sadly, firefox does not support it. boo. soon maybe please?!
