““And if women have it made, why would you be so ungrateful to point to...”
– quoted from an excellent newsweek article, found the link via equalitymyth. women have it far better, but as the article mentioned, the victory may be premature. men still dominate photography, design, illustration, web, technology and all of the areas relevant in my life/career. (amongst others,...

tabular figures, indices and grades, oh my! →
learned about three new things today. tabular figures: allows you keep a grid/column/table with numbers, change the weights of individual entries and still keep the grid. it basically changes weight while keeping the character width fixed. this is awesome. indices: i never considered looking for a typeface with encircled letters or numbers, i always just manually made them as i needed them....

ladies and gentlemen, how do you feel about this?
nostrich: the majority of popular girls on the internet are popular only because they are girls nostrich: that is a fact this is nostrich’s theory. i wholeheartedly feel that this is a huge load of bullshit. edit/more thoughts: what about popular female sellers on etsy? and popular posters of the craftster.org forum? and women who don’t blog but have a strong online presence? and...

brooklyn
brooklyn reminds me of an industrial club i used to go to. no matter how weirdly i dress, someone on the subway will look stranger, douche-ier and/or skankier than me. i dig it.

our existence has serious side effects
excerpts from one of my favorite songs as of late. i absolutely love the writing of this. the song is excellent as well: i found a letter, it read: “our existence has serious side effects” turned on, turned on the television it’s telling me the world is collapsing i think it’s coming and it comes so fast. and my therapist said, “we’ve evolved through a series of...

her basement flooded this weekend
my mom is so awesome: OMG, I read on Wiki How how to get rid of an odor in a damp basement and it said to put charcoal briquettes, like the ones for the barbeque, in a container and leave in the basement.  I put two containers filled with the briquettes. I had them from when I bought that barbeque grill last summer and it worked!!  This morning, the smell is much better. I can’t believe the...

multiplicity on the internet →
fwarg makes an interesting point about how we feel the need to split/categorize ourselves into specific ‘channels’. e.g. having a blog just for your typography stuff, and one just for your drawings, and one for funny ramblings. unfortunately, specific blogs are easier to market and gain popularity. they also fare way better in tumblr’s directory. (and any other category based...

kids doing dumb things, sad stuff
this is not your normal humachine programming, but a recent post by nostrich about his exceptional caring of heather brought up a whole slew of memories. i wanted to share one of them, and it’s something that i will never forget. in july of 2002, my dad was in the ICU desperately in need of a liver transplant. he was only fifty years old. in the same room was a young kid who took way too...

re: the trend of redesigning classic book/movie...
bryanmckay: Laz Marquez redesigned some classic Hitchcock posters. I have mixed feelings about the others in this series (and about this whole trend of redesigning old posters, book covers, etc.) but this one really stands out to me as fabulous work. I could see this on the cover of a Criterion DVD. agreed on the mixed feelings of this trend. one of the things, i think, that makes stuff like...

– what is haute couture? very interesting read. haute couture is the absolute ultimate in craftsmanship, material selection and attention to the body of the wearer. they even consider the normal body stance of the wearer when designing.

awesome web hosting promotion for anyone who wants...
special promotion for broke college students (and anybody, really): order a domain and get a year of web hosting for 8 bucks. the domain can be .com, .net or .org. (use coupon code: 1003BPM) the free web hosting package offered won’t power a huge site, but it’s great to start playing around with minimal commitment. 100mb storage is plenty for static sites and small blogging adventures....
